Community RoomThis 1972 historical musical drama, based on the Broadway musical of the same name, is a fictionalized account of the events leading up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
In the days leading up to July 4, 1776, Continental Congressmen John Adams and Benjamin Franklin coerce Thomas Jefferson into writing the Declaration of Independence as a delaying tactic as they try to persuade the American colonies to support a resolution on independence. Featuring unforgettable songs like “Sit Down, John,” “Till Then,” “The Lees of Old Virginia,” and “Molasses to Rum,” 1776 blends humor, drama, and music to capture the courage, compromise, and conviction that defined America’s earliest days
This screening is of the restored directors cut, which includes several scenes and songs omitted from the original theatrical release. Rated G, it has a run time of 2 hours and 46 minutes. There will be an intermission. Refreshments served starting at 12:45 p.m.
