Experience six films adapted from beloved books in this celebration of classic cinema and great literature. The films in this series were selected through a vote of library staff, who chose their favorite book-to-film adaptations released before 1995. Join us to explore the enduring connection between the written word and the silver screen through stories that have captivated generations.
July 14 - "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" (1945, PG, 2 hours, 8 minutes): Based on the bestselling novel by Betty Smith, this film follows Francie Nolan as she grows up in a struggling family in early 20th-century Brooklyn, navigating poverty, family dynamics, and the challenges of adolescence.
July 21 - "The Age of Innocence" (1993, PG, 2 hours, 19 minutes): Adapted from the novel by Edith Wharton, this film centers on a New York lawyer whose engagement to a prominent socialite is complicated by his attraction to her independent-minded cousin, revealing the rigid social codes of Gilded Age New York.
July 28 - "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994, R, 2 hours, 22 minutes): Drawn from a novella by Stephen King, this film follows a banker sentenced to life in prison who forms an enduring friendship with a fellow inmate while navigating decades behind bars.
Aug. 4 - "My Fair Lady" (1964, NR, 2 hours and 50 minutes): Based on "Pygmalion," the play by George Bernard Shaw, this film follows a phonetics professor who wagers that he can transform a working-class flower seller into a woman capable of passing as a member of high society. The film won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Rex Harrison.
Aug. 11 - "Forrest Gump" (1994, PG-13, 2 hours, 22 minutes): Adapted from the novel by Winston Groom, this film follows an Alabama man whose extraordinary life intersects with many of the defining events of the second half of the 20th century as he pursues love, friendship, and personal fulfillment.
Aug. 18 - "To Kill a Mockingbird" (1962, NR, 2 hours and 9 minutes): Set in Depression-era Alabama and based on the novel by Harper Lee, this Academy Award–winning film follows a small-town lawyer defending a Black man falsely accused of a crime, while his children come to understand the realities of justice and prejudice in their community.
