Join us at Mountain Lakes House to discuss "A Bird Came Down the Walk: Select Bird Poems" by Emily Dickinson. The discussion will include a guided bird walk with expert birder Winnie Hughes Spar.
Presented in partnership with the Friends of Princeton Open Space and the Princeton Environmental Film Festival, this series is dedicated to readings about conservation, stewardship, and our relationship with nature. Led by Diana Newby, FOPOS board member and Associate Director of Writing at Princeton University, each meeting includes a discussion of the book and an accompanying activity. Registration is requested.
About the book
American Poet Emily Dickinson's exquisite poetry spans a broad range of subjects, but perhaps none is so charming as those that she wrote concerning birds. This pocket-sized poetry companion contains 18 beautiful poems alongside Ernest Seton Thompson's delightful colour illustrations dedicated to our feathered friends that will appeal to lovers of poetry and birds alike.
BYO: Participants are welcome to bring binoculars. Wear comfortable hiking shoes or sneakers; the trails can get muddy, especially around the lake.
Winnie Hughes Spar has led bird walks for Washington Crossing Audubon Society and Princeton University Reunions, as well as annual Christmas bird counts in Princeton. She is the author of the poetry chapbook “Frost Flowers” and teaches courses on literature and nature at the Watershed Institute.
