Mara Adler-O'Kelly performs famous and not-so-famous songs from Naples and discusses their history, meaning and connections to American history and culture.
What do Neapolitan Songs, Elvis, Frank Sinatra and Elvis have in Common? From Elvis’ “It’s Now or Never,” to Sinatra’s crooning, (which has become synonymous with what we consider ‘Italian’ music), to Mozart’s popular operas, all of these are linked by one relatively small, city in Italy: Naples!
Any Neapolitan would tell you these are very different things and would correct any American claiming ‘O Sole Mio,’ is Italian as Neapolitan is a totally different language. Much of the drama and passion found in the music that we call ‘Italian’ is actually Neapolitan.
This performance will take you on musical journey exploring the music of Naples from the 1400’s to the 2000’s. Along the way we will explore the meaning and history of the songs. Their translations will also be covered as the language in the songs is different from your standard Italian song. Finally we will see how these songs connect to American history and culture.
Sfogliatelle, biscotti, and cannoli along with coffee will be served at this performance that is being held as part of Italian American Heritage and Culture Month.
