Shahid Nadeem, award-winning Pakistani playwright and director of Ajoka Theatre, is joined in conversation by Fawzia Afzal-Khan, professor of gender and sexuality studies at Princeton University.
In association with an upcoming staged reading of "Lawrence in Lahore: the Lost Years," Fawzia Afzal-Khan hosts director of the Ajoka Theatre Shahid Nadeem, whose work has been widely performed and honored both within Pakistan and internationally.
During the dark days of Zia up Haq, a ban on most forms of artistic expression led Shahid Nadeem to run an underground pro-democracy theatre movement. The conversation explores how art and theatre in South Asia promoted peaceful forms of protest toward the advancement of decolonization, secular democracy and regional peace, translating the lessons learned to the context of the global rise in authoritarianism.
Doors open at 10:45 a.m. for coffee and pastries and the conversation begins at 11 a.m.
