This documentary narrates the Black urban rebellions of the 1960s by focusing on a six-day uprising in Newark, N.J. A panel featuring the filmmakers will follow, Not rated. 1 hour, 22 minutes.
"Revolution '67" explores how Newark, New Jersey, was affected by social unrest over six days in mid-July, 1967. Arising in response to poverty and police brutality, the tumult is remembered now as a landmark event in the ongoing struggle for social justice. Testimony to the event is provided by activists Tom Hayden and Amiri Baraka, journalist Bob Herbert, Mayor Sharpe James, as well as eminent historians, National Guardsmen and Newark citizens. A panel featuring the filmmakers, Marylou & Jerome Bongiorno, together with informed experts will provide context and go deeper into the film's enduring significance.

This film is the first of three award-winning documentaries on Newark in the Bongiornos’ 3Rs Trilogy (followed by THE RULE and RUST).
About the panelists:
Lawrence "Larry" Hamm is a Human Rights & Civil Rights Activist, Humanitarian, Public Speaker, who has been a relentless advocate for African-Americans and the cause of human rights and civil rights for all oppressed people for more than 52 years. Raised in Newark, he received his bachelor's degree and graduated cum laude from Princeton University in 1978. While at Princeton University Larry was an organizer of the campus anti-apartheid movement, which culminated in Princeton University’s divestment in the apartheid South African economy. He is a founder and current Chairman of the People’s Organization for Progress (POP), a statewide, independent, grass roots organization. POP works for racial, social, economic justice and peace. Lawrence “Larry” Hamm is running for U.S. Senator in the 2024 New Jersey Democratic Primary.
Dr. Leslie Wilson is professor of history and associate dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Montclair State University. He received his Ph.D. from the Graduate School of the City University of New York. He is an expert on environmental racism in New York City, community development, American History, and African American studies. Dr. Wilson teaches courses on these topics, including "History of Black Americans" and "The Study of History," and he has published extensively and speaks often on topics related to black history and civil rights.

Marylou & Jerome Bongiorno are Emmy-nominated, award winning, husband-and-wife filmmakers who create social justice documentary, fiction, and museum installation art films that are widely distributed.They formed Bongiorno Productions in Newark and feature their home city in their films, including the acclaimed 3Rs Trilogy that began with REVOLUTION ’67 and was followed by THE RULE and RUST, all currently on national PBS. They are the recipients of major prizes, grants, and fellowships and have been commended internationally for their outstanding contributions to cinema and public knowledge.
