This workshop will take place in three parts. Participants are welcome to attend all the sessions, or a specific session that appeals most to them.
Workshop schedule:
12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. - Part 1: “Designing the Project” takes a broad view of digital oral history, covering project design, community engagement, the consent process, equipment and software for audio processing, transcription and a web presence, and community archiving. Using the Voices of Princeton initiative as an example, this session also highlights ways in which community members may get involved in the initiative’s special projects for the U.S. Semiquincentennial.

1:45 p.m. to 3 p.m. - Part 2: “Collecting Interviews” digs into the practice of digital oral history, showing how to get from the general level of project design to the essential work of facilitating interviews and working in partnership to establish priorities for story collecting. Participants in this session will get hands-on practice with interviewing narrators, review essentials during the pre-interview process, and operating equipment available through the Library of Things Collection.

3:15 p.m. to 4:30 p.m - Part 3: “Processing Interviews and Creating Access” reviews digital tools useful to the practice of digital oral history. Participants will be introduced to software for editing audio files, generating, editing and proofing transcriptions, and for hosting oral history projects on the web.
Using the Voices of Princeton initiative as an example, this workshop also highlights ways in which community members may get involved the initiative’s special projects for the U.S. Semiquincentennial. As computers in the Technology Center are limited to 12, participants may bring their own laptop or mobile device. Supported by the New Jersey State Library’s “Rev250: Examining the Semiquincentennial through a Jersey Lens” grant opportunity and offered in partnership with the New Jersey Council for the Humanities.
