Based on the Icelandic tradition of Jolabokaflod, attendees and library staff gather to discuss their favorite recent books and find their next great reads.
Library staff will be on hand to share some of their favorite recent books, buzz about upcoming titles and advice for finding your next book to read or give as a gift. Participants can take home one of the gently used books and advanced readers' copies that will be available. In keeping with another tradition of Jolabokaflod, hot cocoa will be served.
Jolabokaflod, or the Yule Book Flood, originated during World War II when foreign imports were restricted, but paper was cheap. Iceland could not support a year-round publishing industry, so book publishers flooded the market with new titles in the final weeks of the year and thus the tradition of exchanging books as gifts in December was born.
