Join the fight against declining bee populations by building a bee house during this family-oriented conservation program.
Do you like pumpkins, cherries, blueberries and tomatoes? Then thank a native honey bee! Invite these helpful pollinators to your backyard by building a bee house during this hands on workshop using natural materials and learn why honey bees are essential in maintaining a balanced and healthy ecosystem.
Registration required. For youth in grades third through sixth grades.
The 300 different species of bees native to New Jersey are of vital importance to the state's reputation as "The Garden State." More than 100 crops depend on bees for pollination - including the famous (and delicious) Jersey tomato. Scientists worry that native bees are decreasing in number due to lack of good nesting habitat in urban areas. Do your part to welcome bees back into your yard. Don't worry; most native bees don't tend to sting. Attendees will learn why in the program.
Co-presented with the Mercer County Park Commission.
This event is part of our series examining pollinators and the importance of wildflowers in conjunction with our Pollination Investigation exhibit on the 2nd Floor of the library.
