Spanning Nevada, Utah and portions of California, Idaho, Oregon and Wyoming, "Silence So Deep It Rings: A Desert Chronicle" explores the landscapes of the Great Basin and the Basin and Range Province as well as the profound changes they have undergone. Using a large-format camera, renowned landscape photographer Laura McPhee examines the beauty and fragility of the American West, considering how people live within a changing climate and the lasting effects of settlement, resource extraction and other human activity on the land.
The book also includes perspectives on the American West by acclaimed writer John McPhee, who explored the region decades earlier, as well as an in-depth interview with Laura McPhee and her father by writer Ian Frazier. McPhee will share photographs and stories from the book in a multimedia presentation, followed by a conversation with her sister, writer Jenny McPhee.
