Poet Laureate Joy Harjo's "Wings of Night Sky, Wings of Morning Light" blends storytelling, music, movement and poetic language to chronicle the challenges of young protagonist Redbird.
McCarter returns to the library with its virtual play series Bard at the Gate for an in-person community “watch party” screening of "Wings of Night Sky, Wings of Morning Light."
The production, directed by Madeline Sayet stars Joy Harjo and features music performed by Larry Mitchell, tells the story of Redbird, a young protagonist on a path to healing and self-determination.
About Bard at the Gate: Bard at the Gate offers a simple glance at plays that are ground-breaking: Plays that were too ambitious, too quirky, and too smart to be contained. Strong scripts. Raw talent. New audiences. New Bards. Bard at the Gate directly responds to the lack of representation of diverse voices within the American theatrical canon. This uniquely curated virtual reading series is designed to become a widely accessible platform for powerful, overlooked plays by BIPOC, female, LGBTQIA+ and disabled artists.
About Joy Harjo: In 2019, Joy Harjo was appointed the 23rd United States Poet Laureate, the first Native American to hold the position and only the second person to serve three terms in the role. Harjo has published nine books of poetry and is also the author of two memoirs. She is a chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, Board of Directors Chair of the Native Arts & Cultures Foundation, and is artist-in-residence for the Bob Dylan Center. A renowned musician, Harjo performs with her saxophone nationally and internationally. She lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
About Larry Mitchell: Larry Mitchell is a Grammy award-winning producer, engineer and performer who has toured the world playing guitar with well-known artists including Tracy Chapman, Billy Squier, Ric Ocasek and Miguel Bosé. In his original compositions, Larry skillfully weaves guitar textures that showcase his virtuosity as a solo artist and ensemble player.
