Over four sessions, participants will crochet a 12-inch African American doll from "My Pretty Brown Doll." Requires advanced beginner skills. Free doll kits will be provided. Registration required.
Library staff members lead a four-session Crochet-Along series where participants at least 14 years old can create a one-of-a-kind 12-inch doll using a pattern created by crochet artist, designer, business owner and author, Yolonda Jordan. In her recently published book "My Pretty Brown Doll: Crochet Patterns For A Doll That Looks Like You," Jordan offers all makers, creators and fiber artists the experience "to explore the art of crochet in a way that celebrates the magic of the African American experience" and "celebrate the pretty in every shade of brown.” All materials will be provided to registrants.
Prior knowledge of the following skills will be necessary to complete the project: the ability to read a written crochet pattern with abbreviations, magic circle, single crochet (sc) in the round, single crochet in back loop only (sc blo), single crochet increase (sc inc) and decrease stitches (sc dec), as well as counting stitches with ease and comfortably changing yarn colors. Participants should be 14 years old or older and must register for the full series. Sessions will be held on Jan. 29, Feb. 12, Feb. 26 and March 19.
The library will also host a virtual discussion with creator Yolonda Jordan on Jan. 19.
