Writers receive constructive feedback at these twice-monthly group sessions during which participants read passages from a work in progress and members offer suggestions.
Participants range from published authors to those looking to improve their skills. Works read are less than 10 minutes long (about 1200-1500 words), so there is time to discuss a number of pieces during each session.
Sessions are held in the library on the first Tuesday and the third Monday of the month. The group is led by RoMa Johnson.
Writers Room Guidelines:
The Writers Room offers a warm, welcoming environment that encourages a spirit of creativity. The group is open to diversity of opinion, subject matter and perspective. Moderators reserve the right to prohibit work they deem counterproductive to the group's goals.
Writers sometimes bring content suitable for an adult audience. We strongly recommend participants be at least 18 years old.
This is a critique session for writers to support and learn from each other. Receiving and offering critique can be emotionally risky, requires empathy and should be approached in the spirit of a community working to support the craft of writing. Participants should be honest but also remain civil in their critiques of others’ work.
Each writer has approximately 10 minutes to read and 10 more for discussion. Both creative and expository material are welcome, although the group isn’t able to provide extensive grammatical correction or analyze highly technical work.
Writers are encouraged to provide copies of their material, if possible.
