Lecture: William Still and Sanctuary Road

Music by Paul Moravec and Libretto by Mark Campbell

Samuel Still, executive director of the Dr. James Still Historic Site and Education Center, discusses his illustrious family, including William Still, conductor on the Underground Railroad.

Samuel Still will give a presentation about his remarkable ancestors who escaped slavery and settled in New Jersey, where two of their sons were born and rose to prominence. Dr. James Still (1812 - 1882) became a highly regarded medical doctor, despite his being mostly self-educated. His brother, William Still (1821 - 1902), was a conductor on the Underground Railroad, and a chronicler of those perilous journeys to freedom.  

Tea and cookies will be served starting at 1:45 p.m.        

This event is presented in partnership with Princeton Pro Musica in advance of its May 5 concert of "Sanctuary Road" by American composer Paul Moravec. The libretto, by Mark Campbell, incorporates the writings of William Still in telling the stories of those liberated from bondage.
