At this session via Google Meet, Otsuka's "When the Emperor was Divine" will be featured in a discussion led by Alice Yang, associate professor of history at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and co-director of their Center for the Study of Pacific War Memories.
The novel is loosely based on the experiences of the author's mother’s family. It traces the experiences of one Japanese-American family that is sent to an internment camp during World War II.
